Another Page of history for Greaves Memorial
Posted: Tuesday, July 27, 2010
Mr Consistency,David Page, broke through by a narrow margin for his first win of the season at Braeside Park on Sunday. He was victorious in the 12th running of the Eric Greaves Memorial 10k sealed handicap. The race was named in honour of the late Eric Greaves,a committeeman and fierce competitor with both the Masters and Victorian Cross Country league.Jim Peterson, after seasons of injury, finished six seconds behind Page in his best run with the club since his victory in the 2004 Norm Charles handicap. Joe Caruana, another to show improved form was a second further back in third place. The fastest time was once again taken out by Simon Field and Bridget Wetherall was fastest female. Irene James snared the Novice prize. Next weeks race is The Roy McKenzie handicap, named in honour of without doubt the most dedicated VCCL competitor in history.Roy refuses to miss a race and some of his near misses to get to the starters line are legendary. Roys tally of VCCL starts range from 700 to 800 runs, depending on some rather sketchy records.Regardless of the number it is a record that surely will never be surpassed. Congratulations to Roy from the entire VCCL community.
