2024 Season Planning

By Brian Marantelli 2 March 2024

The Victorian Cross Country League approaches season 2024 (92nd season) looking at a syllabus that suits the current climate in both competitive athletics and casual running. Over the last few years we have found that our historically successful 10am Sunday handicapped events, followed by a social gathering, no longer suit the vast majority of our membership. In 2018 the club, in an attempt to encourage extra membership, added Parkrun to our calendar. Even allowing for two Covid years, season 2023, with an average weekly Parkrun field of nine competitors, failed to deliver what was originally desired. The club also ventured into the previously unknown by joining the Athletics Victoria cross country competition. The VCCL have enjoyed good success with AV, and with the significantly reduced need for track marking, marshalling, administration, council permits and many other requirements the committee see this competition as the best path of survival for the club.

Season 2024, with final decisions to be made before March, will likely be without any VCCL club races nor any future Parkrun involvement.

The VCCL, although very financial, still needs to generate enough income to remain viable and meet the expenses incurred with Athletics Victoria membership as well as the club’s many annual expenses. In the next few weeks the VCCL committee will decide on the format for 2024 with regard to registration fees etc. An update will be posted on the VCCL website as soon as any decisions are made.

The VCCL committee hope to see all current members and many new members for season 2024.
