Hu-Goes for Home

Hugo Sarpa, winner of the 2015 Rendina H’cap.

Race three for VCCL season 2015 saw the 26th running of the Rendina Family 8km at Warringal Park. Hugo Sarpa, after battling injury for quite a few seasons, produced his best form and raced away with the $900 first prize on Sunday. Sarpa, with placings in both of this season's early events, recorded his second club victory with a clear margin of nine seconds over the consistent young gun Julian Harris.

Julian, fresh from his first VAL track season, is sure to greet the judge in the coming weeks and add to his ever increasing prize money "booty". Ian Cayzer, another to come off a successful summer track season, ran a close third, three seconds behind Julian. Andrew Lane, the first of the Colin Davis "Collinnnnngwoooood stable" to cross the line, was fourth, improving marginally on his Karkarook run. Mark Beavis collected his first VCCL "pay cheque" with a solid fifth followed in sixth by Irene James, the first female home. Mark Hipworth was next in and was the first of the powerful "Hippo Stable" to see the finish line. Jacob Nolan was eighth across the line and recorded the fastest time of 27:51. Craig Harris and Fraser Murray completed the top ten. The fastest of female was Corina Kapusta with a time of 31:31.

The VCCL appreciates the continued sponsorship and support that Tony and Charlene Rendina have provided to the Victorian Cross Country League over an extended period of time. We also acknowledge the contribution that Contractfire P/L and Matthew Taylor have made in recent years to make this event one of the richest races on the calendar.

Next Sunday is a "bye" for the VCCL but the following week we travel to Woodlands Park, Greenvale, for the 20th running of the Caruana Classic, start time 11am. The VCCL will be joined by the Bendigo Athletic Club over the tough 8km course.

Runners please note that to be eligible for the Flack Classic in Bendigo, VCCL athletes must have completed three runs with the club this year.
