Janine Seals The Deal On Her Third Win

By Brian Marantelli 6 August 2015

Janine McKerron, winner of the 2015 George Perdon Handicap.

Janine McKerron, once again showing her penchant for sealed handicaps, had sixteen seconds to spare on her rivals at the finish of the 20th George Perdon 10 mile event at Brimbank Park on Sunday. The Perdon was Janine’s third Victorian Cross Country League win in her eight seasons with the club but her first victory beyond 5km. Janine defeated novice athlete Gary Hall, with an unusually large margin of nearly a minute to third placed Corina Kapusta. In fourth place, looking menacingly for races later in the season, was veteran Richie Polkinghorne, taking his third top ten finish from his three starts this season. Andrew Lane kept his season’s record intact with another top ten finish, making it twelve in succession. Hugo Sarpa, after an early morning’s work marking the track, made it to the finish line in sixth position. Kylie Harding produced her best run for the season and best run in her three attempts at the 10 miles distance with a solid seventh. Jacob Nolan, gradually returning to form after an injury was eighth, just ahead for Alan Shields. Sunday’s run was Alan’s best for the season, rejoining the VCCL after a seven year break. Irene James was tenth, making it four out of the top ten places going to the girls. The novice award went to Carl Kennedy and the fastest times to Jacob Nolan (58:36), Robert Eppinger (58:39) and Corina Kapusta (65:15).

The shorter 6.5km sealed handicap, with only a few competitors, was taken out by Julian Harris from Steve Smith.

This Sunday is a rest day for the VCCL but the following week the 31st Helmut Prentler Handicap will be run at Churchill Park Rowville, 10am start.
