Fraser Dominates At Westerfolds Again

By Brian Marantelli 9 October 2018

Fraser Murray, winner of the 2018 Presidents Handicap.

Fraser Murray enhanced his record at Westerfolds Park, taking out the event for the second time, in the final race for the Victorian Cross Country League season. Added to his two wins, the first in 2014, Fraser had finished second and fifth in his four starts over the short course. Entering the final uphill straight, Fraser had a commanding lead with only the young legs of Julian Harris to challenge. Julian closed quickly but failed by one second to overhaul a “spent” winner. Fourteen seconds behind Julian was Harris senior, with Craig not able to match Julian in the run home. Craig was award the Ted Paulin sash for the first over 40’s (other than the winner). Fastest times were registered by Joel Donnar (9:28) and Brigitte Humphreys (11:37).

The final event brought to a conclusion the annual club awards, Club Champion, male and female, Aggregate award as well as various age awards.

Throughout the season the VCCL conducted sealed handicap events with parkruns as well as entering VCCL teams in the Athletics Victoria winter cross country program. The parkruns proved an interesting concept with winners coming from venues all over Australia and opens a concept unique in handicap running. The VCCL teams in the AV competition performed exceptionally well with our Division four team winning their classification with ease, the division seven team finished second overall with only limited appearances. The women’s team finished mid table but also only had limited starts. The aim for 2019 is for the VCCL to enter numerous teams in open, women’s and age categories. VCCL members, running with AV during the summer, can revert back to VCCL for the winter season if they so desire. Anyone wishing to compete next season with the club teams should contact Sean Quilty or Brian Marantelli.

The VCCL will be conducting the Annual General Meeting for season 2018 on Sunday October 21st. The venue is the Boyd Community Hub with a 9am start. The Boyd centre is on the corner of City and Balston Streets Southbank, enter thru the cafe on Sundays.
